It is a bustling village with a wide variety of shops and large market, grouped around an old 12th century fortified castle, church and colourful fishing and pleasure port. The Marais de Müllembourg bird reserveLocated between the campsite and the village, the old salt marshes (some of which are still in use) have been designated as a nature reserve for the protection of the migratory birds that come here to nest (including avocets, shelducks, common terns, black-winged stilts). During the winter, the site is used as a haven for vast numbers of birds, forced by the rising tide to leave the Bay of Bourgneuf (such as broad-billed sandpipers, barnacle geese and various species of duck).
